The United States has expanded its travel restrictions, adding Nigeria and 14 other countries to a partial visa suspension list.
Announced on December 16, 2025, the decision cites “persistent and severe deficiencies in screening, vetting, and information sharing.”
The restrictions mainly affect visas for business, tourism, academic studies, vocational programmes, and exchange visitors.
Countries Newly Added to the US Partial Travel Restriction List
1. Nigeria
2. Angola
3. Antigua and Barbuda
4. Benin
5. Burundi
6. Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast)
7. Cuba
8. Dominica
9. Gabon
10. The Gambia
11. Malawi
12. Mauritania
13. Senegal
14. Tanzania
15. Togo
What This Means
Nationals of these countries now face temporary suspension of B-1 (business), B-2 (tourism), F (academic), M (vocational), and J (exchange visitor) visas.
Travel will remain restricted until the US is satisfied that each country has improved its screening, vetting, and information-sharing procedures.
Some exceptions exist, including permanent US residents, certain existing visa holders, and athletes participating in major sporting events.
The decision has caused frustration among students, business travellers, and families, particularly in Nigeria. Many now face uncertainty in planning study programmes, business trips, or holidays.
Governments in the affected countries are being urged to work with US authorities to address the deficiencies and restore visa access.
This move highlights a broader global trend: international travel increasingly depends on trust, security compliance, and proper documentation.
Countries that fail to meet these standards risk similar restrictions in the future.
