American rap star Nicki Minaj has explained why she recently spoke publicly about the plight of Christians in Nigeria, saying her comments were driven by personal connections and concern over reports of violence against worshippers.
Minaj addressed the issue during a surprise appearance at AmericaFest, where she reacted to questions from attendees about her stance.
She said Nigeria holds a special place for her, noting that her pastor is Nigerian and that she has many Nigerian fans, popularly known as “Barbs”.
The rapper said she was disturbed by reports of kidnappings and killings linked to church attendance, stressing that no one should be attacked or brutalised because of their faith.
According to her, such incidents should provoke global outrage and renewed attention to religious freedom.
Minaj also urged people worldwide not to take the freedom to worship for granted, insisting that she would continue to speak out for Christians and others facing persecution.
Her remarks have sparked debate, with Nigerian authorities maintaining that insecurity in the country affects all citizens, regardless of religion.
