Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has sparked fresh controversy after accusing MTN Nigeria of exploiting subscribers through what he described as rapid and unexplained data depletion.
In a viral statement circulating online, Sowore alleged that many Nigerians are losing purchased data far quicker than expected, raising concerns about transparency in the country’s telecom sector.
He described the situation as exploitative, claiming users are effectively being shortchanged by mobile network providers.
“We have to go after MTN… they’re the biggest data thieves in the world today,” he said, insisting that stronger accountability is needed to protect consumers.
His remarks have triggered widespread reactions, with many Nigerians sharing similar frustrations about data consumption and billing practices.
While MTN Nigeria has not officially responded to the allegations, the issue has intensified public debate around telecom regulation, consumer rights, and the need for clearer service transparency in Nigeria’s increasingly digital economy and mobile communications space.
