Fresh uncertainty has emerged over relations between the United States and Iran, following sharply conflicting accounts from both sides on whether diplomatic engagements are underway.

U.S. President Donald Trump had earlier suggested progress in efforts to ease tensions, stating that Washington and Tehran recently held “very good and productive conversations” aimed at reaching “a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East.”
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the discussions influenced his decision to suspend planned strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure, describing the development as a sign of possible diplomatic breakthrough.
However, Iranian authorities swiftly rejected the claim. State media outlet Press TV, citing a senior security official, denied that any form of negotiations direct or indirect had taken place.
According to the report, the official argued that the U.S. position had shifted under pressure, claiming Trump withdrew his offer of talks due to Iran’s military posture and economic strain facing Western countries.
“Negotiations are not happening and psychological warfare won’t restore the Strait of Hormuz or stabilise energy markets,” the official said.
The official further dismissed Washington’s posture as inconsistent, warning that Trump’s five-day pause on military action signalled continued plans for potential attacks, which Iran said it would counter decisively.
