The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for a new national minimum wage of N154,000, citing deepening economic hardship and the steady erosion of workers’ purchasing power.
The demand was outlined in a letter issued by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC), a negotiating body under the NLC, which urged the Federal Government to urgently review current salary structures across the public service.
The letter, signed by Benjamin Anthony and Olowoyo Gbenga, highlighted the “urgent necessity for an upward review of salaries and allowances” in response to prevailing economic conditions.

According to the council, the existing wage framework no longer aligns with reality, as inflation, rising food prices, and increasing transportation costs continue to strain Nigerian workers.
It noted that the proposed N154,000 minimum wage is designed to help restore a reasonable standard of living, stressing the need for immediate negotiations with the government.
