Renowned Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has stirred widespread debate after revealing plans to divorce his wife in order to freely marry multiple women.
The filmmaker made the disclosure during a watch party for his new film, Aníkúlápó: The Ghoul Awakens, where he said he was already in court pursuing the divorce, insisting he was prepared for the consequences.
Afolayan explained that his stance is rooted in his upbringing, noting that his late father, who had ten wives, played a defining role in shaping his life and career.
According to him, his existence and current success are directly linked to his father’s polygamous lifestyle.
He urged men to embrace multiple relationships, arguing that life is short and should be fully lived.
However, the comments contrast sharply with Afolayan’s earlier position.
In a 2021 interview, he openly rejected polygamy, citing the strain and distractions it caused his father while raising 25 children.
