The Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has announced a new policy requiring all candidates seeking public service positions to undergo mandatory pre-employment drug screening.
The measure aims to tackle rising concerns over substance abuse, which the government identifies as a threat to national security, public health, and workplace productivity.
A circular from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) instructs Permanent Secretaries and heads of Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), and parastatals to incorporate drug tests into their recruitment processes.
The directive also mandates collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to ensure tests follow established standards and protocols.
Only candidates who pass the screening will be eligible for employment.
Segun Imohiosen, OSGF’s Director of Information, said the policy reflects the administration’s commitment to a healthier, more productive workforce.
The initiative complements other anti-drug measures in universities and critical sectors, reinforcing efforts to curb substance abuse nationwide.
