A South Sudanese wedding made headlines after businessman Thon Chol Riak officially married Atong Aguto Monyroor following a dramatic dowry contest.
The negotiations, rooted in Dinka cultural tradition, saw Thon outbid a rival suitor with an astonishing offer that included $77,000 in cash, 297 cows, several plots of land, and educational sponsorships for two of the bride’s family members.
The contest began in December 2025 when two prominent families publicly declared interest in Atong, triggering weeks of intense negotiations.
The rival suitor had offered 158 cows, 161 goats, vehicles, land, and $25,000 in cash, but Thon’s bid ultimately prevailed.
Officials involved in the process confirmed that offers were evaluated based on tradition, family standing, and long-term commitments.
The scale of the bride price has sparked widespread debate, with some celebrating it as a cultural showcase and others raising concerns about the financial pressures of marriage.
