American YouTuber and streamer IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., is set to receive a Ghanaian passport following the conclusion of his Africa tour.
The 21-year-old content creator visited Ghana as part of his live-streamed “Speed Does Africa” tour, which spanned 20 countries and ended on Tuesday.
Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced that the issuance of the passport was approved after confirming IShowSpeed’s Ghanaian roots through his mother.
The minister praised him as a positive ambassador for Ghana and the African continent, encouraging him to continue promoting the region globally.
IShowSpeed, with over 50 million YouTube subscribers, gained attention for showcasing African cultures and challenging stereotypes.
While many Ghanaians welcomed the decision, some critics argued that granting citizenship to foreign influencers might diminish the value of local nationality.
