A Nigerian man, Asuquo Edet, has graduated from Akwa Ibom State University, thirteen years after surviving a violent attack triggered by witchcraft allegations in Udung Uko Local Government Area.
The incident, which occurred in 2014, saw him brutally assaulted by relatives who accused him of causing his father’s illness and death through supernatural means, leaving him severely injured and abandoned.
He was later rescued by Danish humanitarian Anja Ringgren Lovén, who provided urgent medical care and long-term support for his rehabilitation and education.
Recounting the ordeal, Lovén said, “He had been accused of being a witch and attacked brutally, but he never gave up on life.” She added that his determination stood out despite the trauma he endured.
Edet’s 2026 graduation in Genetics and Biotechnology has sparked widespread admiration, with many describing his journey as a powerful testament to resilience amid growing advocacy against harmful witchcraft accusations in Nigeria.
