Senate President Godswill Akpabio has announced the withdrawal of all pending court cases against Senator Natasha Akpoti and other individuals he had accused of defamation.
The decision was made public during a New Year church service at Sacred Heart Parish in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Akpabio revealed that he had filed nearly nine lawsuits over alleged lies and slander against his person but said a sermon delivered by the priest deeply influenced him to reconsider his actions.
According to the Senate President, the message during the service felt personal and prompted a moment of reflection.
Moved by the sermon, he chose forgiveness over prolonged legal battles and instructed his lawyers to discontinue all the cases.
The announcement has generated widespread reactions within political and social circles, with many describing it as an uncommon display of restraint in Nigeria’s political space.
The move could ease tensions, though it has also raised questions about its wider political implications.
