The process of selecting a new Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland has progressed as the Fusengbuwa Ruling House formally presented the names of qualified princes to the kingmakers for consideration.
The submission was made on Monday at the Awujale Palace in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
The Chairman and Head of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, Otunba Abdulateef Owoyemi, led prominent family members and leaders to hand over the list through the Ogbeni Oja of Ijebuland, Olorogun Sunny Kuku.

With the names now submitted, the kingmakers are expected to deliberate and select a preferred candidate. The chosen name will subsequently be forwarded to the Ogun State Government through the Ijebu Ode Local Government and the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for official ratification.
The latest development follows a nomination meeting held by the ruling house a few days earlier, where interested princes and princesses formally declared their intentions to contest for the highly revered throne.
During that meeting, several aspirants were unveiled, including renowned ophthalmic surgeon, Dr. Adekunle Hassan, and the Joint Chairman of ARON Construction Nigeria Limited, Prince Fatai Adesegun. A total of 95 individuals were listed as contenders for the stool.
Notably, only one female aspirant, Princess Oluwakemi Onanuga, expressed interest in the position. Also among the nominees was Otunba Abiodun Onanuga, husband of the former Deputy Governor of Ogun State.
The Awujale stool became vacant following the death of Oba Dr. Sikiru Kayode Adetona on July 13, 2025. The late monarch reigned for an historic 65 years and was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers.
