Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s political camp is reportedly evaluating potential running mates from southern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Sources close to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) indicate that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi is the primary consideration. If Obi declines, attention could turn to former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi.

Political strategist Dele Momodu said that a partnership between Atiku and Obi could present the strongest challenge to President Bola Tinubu. “A coalition of Atiku and Obi offers the best chance to break the APC’s hold on power,” he said, noting that both men had previously contested elections, albeit separately in 2023.

Momodu suggested that delays in forming an alliance stem partly from Obi’s supporters, who prefer independent southern leadership. He added that Amaechi remains a viable alternative, highlighting his strong political network in Rivers State and his previous influence during the 2015 presidential election.

Meanwhile, Obi’s team, represented by Obidient Movement spokesperson Yunusa Tanko, reaffirmed the former Anambra governor’s intention to contest in 2027. Tanko stressed that any collaboration with Atiku must be clearly defined, emphasising the need for a leader capable of addressing Nigeria’s challenges nationwide. He also confirmed that Obi is committed to a single-term presidency if elected.

Amaechi’s aides indicate he is focused on securing the ADC presidential ticket, but discussions about a possible vice-presidential role are yet to be formally considered. Both Obi and Atiku continue to communicate, leaving the possibility of a joint ticket open, depending on political developments in the coming months.
