Youths in Oworonshoki, Lagos, have threatened to stage a protest at the Third Mainland Bridge on Monday, October 27, 2025, in response to the recent demolition of structures in their waterside community.

A notice circulated by the group warned commuters: “Please for those that have planned to work tomorrow morning, be informed that you should plan your route inward island and inward mainland because Oworonshoki youths are planning to lockdown the THIRD MAINLAND BRIDGE in respect to the protest against the Demolition going on in Oworonshoki community. Please be guided.”

Over the weekend, social media videos showed residents of the Precious Seed community fleeing as security operatives deployed teargas to disperse them while officials of the Lagos government continued demolition operations with bulldozers.

On Friday, the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA) began paying compensation to affected property owners in Oworonshoki. The state government said the demolitions were part of its urban regeneration project.

This is not the first protest by residents over the demolitions. In September, community members had also protested at the Third Mainland Bridge.

Reacting to the planned demonstration, the Lagos State Police assured commuters that officers have been deployed to prevent any obstruction or breach of the peace.

Spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi urged residents to proceed with their lawful activities without fear.

“The Lagos State Police Command is aware of information circulating regarding a planned disruption on the Third Mainland Bridge by some youths in the Oworonshoki area,” the statement reads.

“The Command wishes to assure the public that adequate security measures have been put in place to maintain law and order across the state.

“Our officers are fully deployed to ensure the safety of all road users and to prevent any form of obstruction or breach of the peace.

“Members of the public are therefore advised to go about their lawful activities without fear and to cooperate with security personnel carrying out their duties.”
