At least 11 people have been killed and over 50 houses destroyed following a violent attack by suspected hoodlums in Akyawa and Udege Kasa communities of Nasarawa Local Government Area in Nasarawa State.

The Nasarawa State Police Command confirmed the incident, describing it as a reprisal attack linked to the alleged killing of two kinsmen of the assailants.

In a statement on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, Ramhan Nansel, said the violence occurred on Friday, prompting an immediate response from security authorities.

He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Shetima Mohammed, visited the affected communities and expressed sympathy over the loss of lives.

“He commiserated with the families of the deceased and the entire community, assuring them of the Command’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that justice is served,” Nansel said.

The police chief has since ordered a crackdown on those responsible for the attack.

“In response, CP Shetima has ordered an intensive manhunt for all perpetrators of the heinous act, directing tactical teams and investigative units to ensure their prompt identification, arrest, and prosecution.

“To prevent any further breakdown of law and order, the Commissioner of Police has also directed the immediate reinforcement and sustained deployment of Police personnel, in synergy with the Military and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to provide adequate security and restore lasting peace in the area.”

During a stakeholders’ meeting held in the course of his visit, the commissioner appealed to residents to remain calm and support ongoing security efforts by sharing useful information.

“The Command reassures members of the public that normalcy has been restored to the affected communities, while proactive measures are in place to prevent any recurrence of violence,” Nansel said.
