A Nigerian woman has sparked widespread debate on social media after lamenting a steep rent increase imposed by her landlord in Lagos, barely a year after the last adjustment.
In a viral video, the visibly distressed tenant revealed that her rent was raised by ₦700,000 in 2025.
Just months later, in January 2026, the landlord reportedly added another ₦1.7 million, a move she described as unbearable.
Questioning how ordinary Nigerians are expected to survive, she said salary earners and small business owners are already overwhelmed by rising living costs.
According to her, expenses such as food, transport and utilities have continued to soar, leaving many households under intense financial strain.
She warned that such unrealistic demands could push people towards desperate choices, suggesting that the situation feels like an indirect encouragement to engage in illegal activities just to keep a roof over their heads.
Her remarks have since drawn mixed reactions online.
