President Bola Tinubu has attributed the ruling party’s performance in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) council elections to the “remarkable achievements” of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, saying the administration’s record translated into political gains for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu congratulated winners of the elections held in the FCT as well as by-elections conducted in Kano State and Rivers State.

“President Bola Tinubu congratulates the winners of Saturday’s elections in the Federal Capital Territory and the states of Kano and Rivers,” the statement read.

The polls, organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), covered chairmanship and councillorship positions across the FCT’s six area councils.

By-elections were also conducted in Ahoada East II and Khana II state constituencies in Rivers State, and in Kano Municipal and Ungogo constituencies in Kano State.

According to the statement, “The President urges the winners to serve with humility, patriotism, and dedication and to view the mandate given to them by the people as a sacred trust.”

Tinubu extended congratulations to the APC’s national leadership, as well as party leaders and members in Kano and Rivers states, on what he described as electoral successes.

“He commends the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for his remarkable achievements in the territory, which have yielded political dividends to the governing All Progressives Congress (APC),” the statement reads.

The President also praised INEC, security agencies and voters for what he called the peaceful conduct of the elections.

“President Tinubu lauds the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and voters for the peaceful and successful conduct of the elections.

“He further commends the courage and discipline displayed by all the contestants, stating that democracy is enriched with the vibrancy of participation and competition.”

Tinubu added that the polls reinforce Nigeria’s democratic culture and institutions, urging INEC to build on the exercise and deliver “even more exemplary electoral processes” in future elections.

Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former governor of Rivers State, was appointed FCT minister by Tinubu after the 2023 general election despite belonging to the opposition party.

His participation in the APC-led administration has continued to generate debate within the PDP, with some members accusing him of undermining party interests.
