The Kogi State Police Command has launched an investigation into the killing of Aminu Lawal, a University of Maiduguri graduate who was awaiting mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Aminu was reportedly murdered in Lokoja about two weeks ago, an incident that has left his family and community in grief while sparking concerns over possible interference in the case.

Family members said the young graduate was declared missing on Wednesday, March 18, after he left his residence in Otokiti Estate to operate his commercial tricycle, popularly known as Keke NAPEP, but did not return home.

Search efforts by relatives and neighbours intensified overnight, only to end in tragedy the next day when his charred remains were discovered along a secluded bush path opposite the Central Bank area in Zone 8, Lokoja. His tricycle was missing.

Sources familiar with the case said the attackers had inflicted fatal injuries on him before setting his body ablaze. He was subsequently buried in accordance with Islamic rites.

The case gained momentum following a community-led inquiry that reportedly linked a man identified as Garuba—said to be an acquaintance of the deceased and a fellow resident of Otokiti Estate—to the incident. He was believed to be among the last people to have contact with Aminu before his disappearance.

Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) later arrested the suspect at his residence on Wednesday, March 25. He was initially held at the NSCDC office before the matter was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further probe.

However, concerns have emerged over alleged attempts to influence the course of justice.

A source close to the investigation, who requested anonymity, warned against any compromise in the case. “We are appealing that this case should not be swept under the carpet,” the source said.

“Aminu struggled through school and successfully trained himself in Maiduguri despite the security challenges there. He returned home after completing his studies, only to be murdered.

“The least we can do is ensure that those responsible are identified and brought to justice. We are demanding a thorough and timely investigation.”

Reacting, the Police Public Relations Officer in Kogi State, ASP Hafzatt Oyiza Salihu, confirmed that investigations are ongoing, adding that efforts were also being made to recover the victim’s missing tricycle.

“We are still investigating the case, including the whereabouts of the Keke NAPEP,” she said.

“We will pursue the investigation to a logical conclusion, and details will be made public when appropriate.”
