The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 38-year-old man, Hamisu Abdullahi, for allegedly disrupting official proceedings during Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s visit to Suleja after Eid-el-Fitr prayers.
Abdullahi was reportedly apprehended after shouting “no water, no light” at the emir’s palace during the governor’s Sallah visit to the Emir of Suleja.
Confirming the incident, the police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the suspect was taken into custody for actions considered disruptive to government activities.
“One Hamisu Abdullahi, 38, of Suleja, was arrested and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Minna, on March 20, 2026, for suspected thuggery and attempting to disrupt government activities during the Sallah visit,” he said.
“However, he was later granted bail while investigation continues.”

The suspect’s brother, Haruna Abdullahi, said he was released on bail on Tuesday after spending five days in detention.
Abdullahi, an electrician and father of four, resides in Unguwan Bayi area of Suleja. His arrest has sparked claims that it was carried out on the orders of the governor, although this could not be independently verified.
Meanwhile, the International Press Institute Nigeria has raised concerns over press freedom in the state, calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to caution Governor Bago.
In a statement jointly signed by its Deputy President, Fidelis Mbah, and Legal Adviser, Tobi Soniyi, the organisation alleged that certain actions by the state government and its officials have infringed on the rights of journalists and media organisations to operate freely.
