The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected recognising the Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), pointing to existing court rulings and unresolved legal disputes surrounding the party’s leadership.
In a letter dated December 22, 2025, and signed by its Secretary, Dr Rose Oriaran-Anthony, the commission said it would not honour requests to acknowledge or publish on its website the names of national officers reportedly elected at the PDP’s national convention held in Ibadan on November 15 and 16.

INEC explained that its decision was based on subsisting court judgments and pending cases arising from the leadership crisis within the opposition party. The commission stressed that acting otherwise could amount to contempt of court.
The electoral umpire added that it would be inappropriate to accord recognition to any faction or its officials until the judiciary has finally resolved the disputes.
INEC urged all parties involved to allow due legal process to run its course, reaffirming its commitment to neutrality and strict adherence to the rule of law in political party matters.
