The Federal Government has intensified efforts to shut down social media accounts used by terrorists and criminal groups to coordinate operations and raise funds.
Maj.-Gen. Adamu Laka, Director-General of the National Counter Terrorism Centre, said platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and X have been exploited to broadcast crimes and display stolen goods.
Authorities have engaged with these platforms to remove threatening content, stopping live streams of criminal activities.
Laka highlighted that ransom payments remain a primary income source for kidnappers, often routed through third parties, complicating investigations.
Security agencies are actively tracking these channels, apprehending offenders, and recovering misappropriated funds.
He warned that terrorists continuously create fake accounts and aliases to evade detection but assured that Nigeria is committed to strengthening both digital and physical counter-terrorism measures.
Laka also noted that instability in neighbouring Sahel countries affects domestic security, emphasising Nigeria’s leadership role in addressing regional threats and safeguarding citizens.
