At least eight suspected bandits have been killed following an explosion triggered by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along Lukope Road in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.
The incident, which occurred around 8:30 p.m. on March 20, was reported along the Kurebe–Kushaka axis, a known route used by armed groups operating within the forest belt.
A counter-insurgency expert focused on the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, disclosed the development in a post on X, noting that the explosive device was believed to have been planted by the bandits themselves to target advancing security forces.
According to the report, the device detonated when members of the group unknowingly rode over it while travelling on motorcycles.
“The explosion occurred as the bandits were transiting the route, leading to the instant death of about eight of them and the injury of several others,” the source said.
The affected individuals were reportedly linked to a faction loyal to a notorious band
