Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has revealed that his decision not to sentence Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to death was guided by a Biblical injunction calling for mercy.

The court instead sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment on counts 1, 4, 5, and 6 of the charges, 20 years on count 3, and five years on count 7, all without the option of a fine.
Justice Omotosho further ordered that Kanu be kept in protective custody and directed the forfeiture of a radio transmitter he had illegally imported into Nigeria to the federal government.
