The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced a policy requiring generator owners in Abuja to pay fees for noise pollution.
The notice, displayed at a business office in Zone 11, indicates the government’s aim to regulate noise levels from private power generation.
The proposed policy has sparked concern among residents and business owners, many of whom rely on generators due to inconsistent electricity supply.
“In Abuja, we rely on generators because there is no guarantee of stable power. Penalising us for that feels unfair,” said Chinedu Okafor, a small business owner.
Targeting individual generator users may disproportionately affect citizens without addressing the broader electricity challenges in the city.
Details on how the fees will be calculated or enforced have not yet been released, leaving residents anxious.
Environmental advocates support regulating noise pollution but urge the government to consider incentives for cleaner energy solutions to balance public needs and environmental concerns.
