Fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province have reportedly buried about 30 of their members following recent airstrikes by the Nigerian military in parts of northern Borno State.

A video circulating online and shared by counter-insurgency analyst Zagazola Makama showed what were described as burial rites carried out by the insurgents after the strikes.

According to Makama, who cited security sources, the burials took place in the Mallam Fatori axis after a series of coordinated air interdiction missions conducted by troops under Operation HADIN KAI.

The development follows earlier reports that military air operations neutralised dozens of insurgents in the Lake Chad region.

Sources said the strikes were launched after intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) reports confirmed the movement of ISWAP fighters along waterways around the Kaniram Island area.

The Nigerian military has intensified aerial offensives in the North-East in recent months, targeting insurgent enclaves and logistics routes as part of ongoing counterterrorism operations.
