Grief and renewed calls for justice marked the burial of six traders killed during a police shooting at the Owode Onirin International Motor Spare Parts Market in Lagos, as families laid their loved ones to rest in Ikorodu.

The victims, who died on August 27, 2025 an incident now widely referred to as “Black Wednesday” were buried after solemn rites that began at the Ikorodu General Hospital, where relatives gathered to receive their remains.

The traders were killed during a violent confrontation that erupted amid a controversial demolition exercise at the market located in Agboyi-Ketu LCDA.

What reportedly started as resistance by traders escalated into chaos, ending in gunfire that claimed six lives.

Those buried were identified as Seyi Akinboye, Adeoye Taiwo, Dare Mufutau, Aderemi Hakeem, Abraham Temoola, and Wale Adebayo.

At the burial, emotions ran high as family members and associates described the deceased as hardworking breadwinners, insisting that justice must not be compromised.

“These were innocent men trying to earn a living. Their killers must be held accountable,” one mourner said.

In response to the incident, authorities charged four police officers Manu Bala, Jibrin Samaila, Ibrahim Garuba, and Ibrahim Kashimu with conspiracy and murder. The officers are currently in custody awaiting further legal proceedings.

However, families of the victims expressed dissatisfaction with the pace and scope of justice, alleging that the suspected mastermind behind the operation has yet to be prosecuted. They urged the government to ensure that all those involved are brought to book.

Human rights groups have also condemned the killings, calling for an independent investigation and adequate compensation for the bereaved families.

The traders were eventually laid to rest in Igbogbo, leaving behind grieving widows, children, and a community still reeling from the tragedy.

Chairman of the market, Abiodun Ahmed, reaffirmed the resolve of traders to pursue justice, vowing that the incident would not be forgotten until all responsible parties are held accountable.
