A High Court sitting in the Gwarzo Division of Kano State has sentenced an 85-year-old man, Malam Isah Abdullahi, to 14 years’ imprisonment for rape.

The conviction followed a successful prosecution by the Kano State Ministry of Justice before High Court No. 24, over an offence committed on November 30, 2024, in Sauna, Gabasawa Local Government Area.

In a statement, the ministry’s spokesman, Najib Lawn Dambazau, said the prosecution presented sufficient evidence to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt.

Delivering judgment, Justice Aisha Mahmud found the defendant guilty and handed down a 14-year prison sentence, while also considering a plea for leniency made by the defence counsel.

The case was prosecuted by the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Salisu Muhammad Tahir, alongside other members of the prosecution team.

Reacting to the verdict, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude (SAN), commended the legal team for securing the conviction, describing it as a reflection of the ministry’s commitment to justice.

The ministry reaffirmed its resolve to protect the rights and dignity of victims, while ensuring that perpetrators of sexual offences and other violent crimes are brought to justice.
