iPhone 18 Pro, ProMax Leaks Point to Major Design Shift, Camera Upgrade

With half a year still to go before Apple is expected to unveil its next Pro iPhones, the conversation around the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max has already shifted from speculation to detailed expectation.

A steady stream of leaks suggests that this cycle may focus less on incremental tweaks and more on visible refinements—particularly to the display, camera hardware, and internal architecture.

For several generations, Apple has retained the pill-shaped cutout and Dynamic Island design introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro. That consistency may soon give way to something noticeably different.

Reports indicate Apple is testing under-display Face ID, potentially allowing most facial recognition components to sit beneath the screen.

If that technology is ready in time, the current pill cutout could shrink to a single hole-punch camera.

Some prototype renders even place the selfie camera at the top-left corner rather than the center a subtle shift that would immediately distinguish the new Pro models from their predecessors.

The Dynamic Island is not expected to vanish entirely. Instead, it may evolve into a smaller, less intrusive element positioned closer to the camera cutout, preserving live activity features—navigation prompts, music playback, timers while reducing visual distraction.

At the back, Apple appears to be playing it safe. The triple-camera arrangement is likely to remain housed in a raised module.

However, refinements to the glass finish and its integration with the aluminium frame are reportedly in development. Internally tested colour options could include darker, more saturated tones such as deep purple, burgundy, and brown-inspired finishes.

The real changes may lie inside the camera system.

One of the most discussed upgrades is a variable aperture for the main camera—something rarely seen on iPhones so far. Unlike fixed apertures used today, a variable system physically adjusts the lens opening, allowing more or less light to enter. That could mean improved low-light shots and more natural background blur without relying as heavily on computational effects.

Early reports suggest this feature may debut exclusively on the Pro Max.

In addition, Apple is rumored to adopt a new three-layer stacked image sensor, believed to be supplied by Samsung. The design promises faster readout speeds, improved dynamic range, and lower image noise. Larger apertures on both the main and telephoto lenses are also being discussed, potentially boosting night photography and video performance.

Powering the lineup is expected to be the A20 Pro chip, reportedly built on TSMC’s 2nm process. Beyond the smaller manufacturing node, the bigger shift may be architectural: RAM could sit directly on the same wafer as the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine. That tighter integration may improve performance, thermal management, and energy efficiency simultaneously.

Early projections suggest performance gains in the range of 15 percent, alongside up to 30 percent better power efficiency compared to the previous generation. Such improvements would not only benefit everyday responsiveness but could also support more advanced on-device AI features.

Internal reengineering may free up physical space inside the chassis. Apple could use that room for better cooling—or a larger battery.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is rumored to pack a battery around 5,100mAh, potentially making it slightly thicker and heavier than before. At over 240 grams, it may not be the lightest flagship on the market, but extended battery life could outweigh that trade-off for many users.

Connectivity upgrades are also in focus. The Pro Max may introduce Apple’s next-generation C2 modem, possibly marking the return of mmWave 5G support within Apple’s in-house modem solution—an important addition in markets where mmWave infrastructure is available.

Display sizes, however, are expected to remain unchanged: roughly 6.3 inches for the Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max. The headline difference will likely be the cleaner front aesthetic rather than panel dimensions.

Apple is widely expected to unveil the new models in September 2026, maintaining its typical launch cadence. Pricing remains unclear. With the iPhone 17 Pro already commanding premium pricing in India and other markets, Apple may aim to hold the line rather than introduce further hikes—especially in price-sensitive regions.

While none of these details are official, the emerging picture suggests that the iPhone 18 Pro series could represent more than a routine refresh. If the under-display Face ID, camera hardware upgrades, and efficiency gains materialize, this may be one of the more visibly progressive updates in Apple’s recent Pro lineup.
