The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that investigations into the arrest of 16 military officers have uncovered allegations that some of them were involved in plans to overthrow the government (coup plot).

The officers, whose ranks range from Captain to Brigadier General, were arrested in October 2025 for acts of indiscipline and violations of service rules.

At the time, the military described the case as an internal disciplinary matter and dismissed reports suggesting a coup plot.

However, in a fresh update issued on Monday, the new Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, disclosed that the investigation had been completed and that some of the officers were found to have serious cases to answer.

According to Uba, the probe was conducted in line with established military procedures and its findings have been forwarded to the appropriate superior authorities for further action.

He said the investigation revealed allegations that some of the officers had engaged in activities inconsistent with military ethics and professional standards, including claims of plotting to overthrow the government.

Uba added that those indicted would be formally charged before relevant military judicial panels and tried in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other service regulations.

He stressed that the process would be guided by fairness and due process, noting that the actions being taken were strictly disciplinary and aimed at preserving order and professionalism within the Armed Forces.

“The Armed Forces remain resolute in maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority,” Uba said.

The arrests had earlier sparked public debate after reports linked them to an alleged coup attempt and the cancellation of the 2025 Independence Day parade.

The military initially rejected those claims, insisting the matter was being handled internally.
