Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has criticised Nigeria’s political leadership following a fatal road accident involving boxing star Anthony Joshua and members of his entourage in Ogun State.
Reacting to reports that the crash claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s associates, Sowore said the incident reflected long-standing governance failures, particularly in road safety and emergency response systems.
In a statement shared online, he revealed that he had previously warned Joshua against associating with Nigeria’s political elite, whom he described as having failed the country.
Sowore stressed that the tragedy should not be overshadowed by Joshua’s survival, noting that similar accidents occur daily across Nigeria with little attention.
He blamed weak institutions, poor infrastructure and the absence of functional emergency services for preventable deaths on the roads.
The activist called for accountability and urged influential figures to avoid legitimising what he termed systemic dysfunction.
He also offered condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.
