How to Take the Perfect Instagram Selfie: Dos and Don’ts

By Favour Osah

A good selfie looks effortless, but it takes a bit of thought. Lighting, angles, and confidence matter more than filters. Here’s how to make every shot worth posting.

Dos

  1. Find natural light.
Stand near a window or go outside during golden hour, right after sunrise or before sunset. It softens shadows and gives your skin a natural glow.
  2. Know your angles.
Tilt your chin slightly down and hold the camera a little above eye level. It sharpens your jawline and opens your eyes. Test both sides of your face, one usually photographs better.
  3. Keep your background simple.
Clutter pulls focus. Clean spaces, plain walls, or calm outdoor spots make your face stand out more.
  4. Use the back camera when possible.
It has better resolution and captures details more clearly than the front one. Use a timer or tripod if needed.
  5. Edit lightly.
Adjust brightness and contrast, but don’t over-filter. A natural look earns more engagement because it feels real.
  6. Be expressive.
A small smile, raised eyebrow, or quick laugh looks more human than a stiff pose. Take a few test shots until one feels authentic.

Don’ts

  1. Don’t shoot in harsh light.
Direct sunlight creates strong shadows and highlights texture you might not want.
  2. Don’t overuse filters.
Too much smoothing or color change makes selfies look fake. Viewers notice.
  3. Don’t crowd the frame.
Leave space above your head and around your shoulders. It makes the shot cleaner.
  4. Don’t ignore posture.
Slouching dulls confidence. Stand tall, relax your shoulders, and keep your neck long.
  5. Don’t post every take.
Pick one or two of the best. Posting too many at once weakens the effect.

A good selfie doesn’t need perfection. It needs presence. When you look comfortable, the photo works.
