Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress for the 2027 elections, Peter Obi, has commended Afrobeats star Davido for using his appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup countdown concert to draw international attention to Nigeria’s worsening insecurity and the prolonged captivity of abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State.
Obi, in a statement posted on his official X handle, described the singer’s gesture as patriotic after Davido performed wearing a customised jacket bearing the names of the kidnapped victims and the inscription “BRING THEM HOME.”
He said the act went beyond entertainment and helped spotlight Nigeria’s security challenges before a global audience.
Obi also argued that Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup reflected poor political leadership rather than a lack of talent, noting that Nigerian musicians and citizens continue to make significant contributions on the world stage.
He urged leaders to create an environment that allows young Nigerians to maximise their potential and succeed globally.
