Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has criticised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alleging that Nigeria is witnessing a steady decline in public integrity and accountability under the current political climate.

Effiong made the remarks in a statement shared on his verified X handle on May 19, where he expressed concern over what he described as the growing culture of compromise among public figures and political actors.

According to the lawyer, individuals previously regarded as principled voices in society were gradually abandoning their convictions and remaining silent on issues of governance.

“By the time Bola Tinubu is done destroying this country, we will have to conduct a special census to determine the number of people whose integrity are still intact,” he stated.

Effiong further alleged that the present political environment was being driven by widespread inducement and influence.

“Tinubu is buying and compromising people in an unprecedented way,” he wrote.

The lawyer also accused some public figures and commentators of deliberately avoiding criticism of the government despite concerns over governance and accountability.

“People we thought were principled are now blind, deaf and dumb to bad governance in our country,” he said.

He claimed that some individuals presenting themselves as neutral observers were indirectly defending the administration and resisting calls for political change.

“Some are pretending to be neutral, while at the same time making excuses for Tinubu and tacitly opposing any effort to change the status quo,” Effiong added.

The comments have generated reactions on social media, with users expressing differing opinions over the allegations.
