As Muslims prepare for the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebration, many Nigerians are cutting down on festive spending as rising food and livestock prices worsen economic hardship across the country.

At major markets in Lagos and Badagry, traders reported sharp increases in the prices of tomatoes, pepper, onions, rice and cooking oil, leaving many families struggling to afford basic needs.

Livestock dealers also disclosed that ram prices now range between N700,000 and N900,000, while large cows sell for as high as N1.5 million.

Several residents said the situation has forced them to adopt modest celebrations. Some families revealed they would share the cost of cows with relatives, while others have cancelled plans to buy rams or travel during the holiday.

A resident, Taiwo Jimoh, said there would be no new clothes for his children this year due to financial challenges.

Despite the hardship, many Nigerians insist the true spirit of Sallah lies in sacrifice, faith and togetherness rather than extravagant spending.
