Afrobeats star Davido has defended his decision to spotlight Nigeria’s insecurity crisis on the global stage, insisting that citizens must not remain silent in the face of worsening violence and kidnappings.
The singer’s reaction followed criticism from popular Hausa musician Dauda Rarara, who described Davido’s appearance at the FIFA World Cup 2026 Countdown Concert in Los Angeles as “barbaric” after he wore a customised jacket bearing the names of more than 40 pupils and teachers abducted in Oyo State.
Rarara argued that publicising the issue internationally could damage Nigeria’s image and accused the singer of politicising a sensitive security matter.
The disagreement quickly escalated on social media, with both entertainers exchanging sharp remarks. Responding in a follow-up statement, Davido maintained that patriotism requires Nigerians to speak openly about insecurity regardless of political affiliations.
He criticised what he described as political bias and urged citizens to prioritise national welfare over partisan interests.
The singer further stated that putting politics above truth and the interests of the public was harmful to the country’s progress, while calling on Nigerians to remain courageous in demanding solutions to the security challenges affecting communities across the nation.
