A woman has triggered intense debate on social media after declaring that marriage should not be treated as a lifelong commitment, arguing instead that unions should come with “expiry dates”.
In a viral clip, she said expecting couples to remain emotionally and mentally aligned for 30 or 40 years ignores human biology and personal evolution.
According to her, people constantly change due to life experiences such as childbirth, grief, ageing, and shifting responsibilities, which can significantly alter feelings and priorities.
She insisted that many marriages fail not because partners are lazy or uncommitted, but because they grow into different versions of themselves over time.
Proposing a new model, the woman suggested that couples should reassess their marriage every five years and mutually decide whether to continue.
“If both people still believe they work well as a team, fine. But forcing marriage to last forever doesn’t make sense,” she said.
She further argued that divorce rates are rising because marriage is driven more by biology than love. Her comments have drawn mixed reactions online.
