Impeachment proceedings have been initiated against the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdulsalam, following allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office and breach of public trust.

The process began on Thursday during plenary at the Kano State House of Assembly after lawmakers presented a formal notice accusing the deputy governor of financial impropriety linked to his previous role in the state government.

The notice was read before the House by Majority Leader, Lawan Husseini Dala, while proceedings were presided over by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore.

According to the lawmakers, the impeachment move is being carried out under Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, which empowers state legislatures to begin removal proceedings against a governor or deputy governor over allegations of gross misconduct.

The Assembly accused Abdulsalam of violating public trust during his tenure as Commissioner for Local Government between 2023 and 2024.

Lawmakers alleged that within that period he collected monthly kickbacks of N1.5 million from each of the state’s 44 local government councils between June 2023 and January 2024. The alleged payments, they said, amounted to N66 million monthly and a cumulative total of about N462 million over seven months.

The notice further claimed that between February and July 2024, the deputy governor received additional payments of N3.255 million monthly from each council under the guise of special assignments, bringing the alleged total to N726 million during that period.

In addition, the Assembly accused Abdulsalam of facilitating the release of N10 million from each of the 44 local governments — amounting to N440 million — to NovoMed Pharmaceuticals Limited, an action lawmakers claim violated the state’s procurement and fiscal management regulations.

The lawmakers argued that the alleged conduct constitutes gross misconduct under Section 188(2) of the constitution and falls below the ethical standards expected of public officials.

A total of 38 lawmakers reportedly signed the impeachment notice.

Following its presentation, Speaker Falgore directed that the notice be formally served on the deputy governor in accordance with constitutional procedures guiding impeachment proce
