Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader for 36 years, has died at age 86 after United States and Israeli air strikes targeted and destroyed his compound in Tehran, Iranian state media reported.
Khamenei rose to lead the Islamic Republic in 1989 and became its most powerful figure, directing domestic governance, foreign policy and the military.
He framed the United States as Iran’s chief adversary and opposed Western influence, especially over Iran’s nuclear programme.
Under his leadership, Iran expanded influence across the Middle East through support for allied militias and governments.
Khamenei’s rule saw repeated protests and unrest, with authorities using strict measures to maintain control.
Although he endorsed a 2015 nuclear accord, he distrusted the West and resisted further concessions.
His death follows escalating conflict between Iran, the US and Israel, including recent negotiations and military actions.
Iran now confronts both external pressure and ongoing internal dissatisfaction, particularly among younger citizens calling for change.
