A routine traffic enforcement exercise by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) descended into violence over the weekend after a commercial bus (Danfo) driver allegedly attacked an officer at the Ojota Interchange in Lagos.
The incident occurred along the Ojota–Ketu corridor when LASTMA operatives intercepted a painted Caravelle GL Volkswagen commercial bus, registration number EKY 693 YK, during a lawful operation.
Officials said the vehicle was flagged down for a serious traffic infraction after it was spotted conveying passengers with its door left ajar, a situation described as dangerous to both commuters and other road users.
According to LASTMA, the danfo driver refused to comply with enforcement directives and attempted to evade arrest by mounting the road median in a reckless bid to escape.
The attempt failed after the bus (danfo) became stuck on the carriageway, further escalating tensions at the scene.

The agency said the situation took a violent turn when the driver allegedly attacked enforcement officers.
LASTMA stated, “In a shocking display of brutality, he seized a jagged broken bottle from within the bus and lunged at the enforcement officers, stabbing one officer in the fingers of his right hand.”
The injured officer reportedly suffered severe fractures and significant blood loss before the suspect fled the area.
While the driver escaped, LASTMA said the vehicle was immediately impounded in accordance with existing regulations.
The wounded officer was rushed to a medical facility for emergency treatment.
LASTMA disclosed that two fingers required operative reconstruction due to the gravity of the injuries and that the officer remains under close medical observation.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the attack, describing it as an unacceptable assault on public order.
He said, “Any act of violence against traffic enforcement personnel constitutes a direct affront to lawful authority and civil order.”
Bakare-Oki confirmed that the case has been formally reported to the police, adding that investigations are ongoing to ensure the arrest and prosecution of the fleeing suspect.
He also issued a warning to commercial transport operators, stressing that traffic laws must be obeyed at all times.
“The Authority will continue to intensify enforcement operations to safeguard public safety and uphold regulatory discipline across Lagos State,” he said.
LASTMA reaffirmed its resolve to maintain order, discipline and free traffic flow across the metropolis, warning that violent resistance and lawlessness would always attract firm legal consequences
