An American traveler has sparked debate online after sharing his shocking experience with what he described as persistent cash demands while moving through Nigeria.

Speaking publicly, he recounted being asked for money at least ten times while entering and leaving airports across the country.

He also expressed concern about the numerous road checkpoints, questioning their true purpose.

“Many roads have police checkpoints, but are they really security checkpoints or just shakedown points?” he asked, highlighting his frustration and raising broader concerns about corruption and safety.

The man’s comments have ignited reactions on social media, with some agreeing about the prevalence of unofficial fees, while others defended Nigerian security personnel, arguing that most checkpoints serve legitimate purposes.

The post has intensified discussions on travellers’ experiences in Nigeria and the need for transparency and accountability at security points to improve the country’s image internationally.
