The All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken an early lead in the Federal Capital Territory’s Area Council elections, winning three of the four chairmanship results announced so far, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) captured a crucial victory in Gwagwalada.
Results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) show that the ruling party consolidated its presence in key councils, tightening its grip on grassroots administration in the capital territory.
In Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), APC candidate Christopher Maikalangu secured a decisive mandate with 40,295 votes.

His closest challenger from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) trailed with 12,109 votes, while the PDP finished a distant third with 3,398 votes.
The pattern continued in Bwari Area Council, where Joshua Ishaku of the APC polled 18,466 votes to defeat the ADC candidate, who garnered 4,254 votes. The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) candidate placed third with 3,515 votes.
Kwali Area Council also swung in favour of the APC. Daniel Nuhu clinched the chairmanship seat with 17,032 votes, comfortably ahead of PDP’s Haruna Pai, who recorded 8,575 votes.
However, the PDP halted the APC’s sweep in Gwagwalada Area Council. Mohammed Kasim delivered a strong performance for the opposition party, polling 22,165 votes to overcome APC’s Yahaya Shehu, who secured 17,788 votes.
The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate, Biko Umar, finished third with 1,687 votes.
With three councils declared for the APC and one for the PDP, attention now turns to the remaining two Area Councils, where INEC is finalising collation.
