Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti has opened a new chapter for African music on the global stage, emerging as the first artist from the continent to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
The late Nigerian icon will be honoured in the ‘Early Influence’ category, placing him among a select group of global trailblazers whose sound reshaped modern music.
His induction was announced in the United States during a live segment of American Idol, where this year’s honourees were unveiled.
Joining him in the 2026 class is Nigerian-born British singer Sade Adu, who secured recognition in the ‘Performer’ category, underscoring her enduring appeal in soul and pop music.
Fela shares the ‘Early Influence’ honour with a diverse group of global acts, including Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Gram Parsons, and Celia Cruz.
However, several high-profile nominees—including Shakira, Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, New Edition, and Pink—did not make the final list.
Organisers said more than 1,200 artists, historians and industry professionals participated in the voting process that determined the 2026 inductees.
The official induction ceremony is scheduled for November 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
