The Imo State Police Command has detained four individuals over the alleged possession and circulation of prohibited fireworks and other pyrotechnic materials in Owerri, as the force intensifies efforts to curb festive-season hazards.

The arrests, announced on Sunday night, were confirmed by the command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, who said the suspects were picked up during coordinated security operations across the state capital.

Those in custody were identified as Victor Amadi, 29; Moses Okoro, 31; Ebuka Onye, 28; and Isaac Amadi, 23.

Explaining how the suspects were apprehended, Okoye said, ”Their arrests followed separate intelligence led raids conducted at different locations within the Owerri metropolis, during which large quantities of prohibited fireworks and other pyrotechnic items were recovered.”

He stressed that the police would not tolerate the use or trade of fireworks, knockouts, bangers, or similar explosive materials, warning that offenders would face the full weight of the law.

Reaffirming the command’s position, the police spokesman added, ”The Command reiterates the total ban on the use, sale, distribution, and possession of fireworks, knockouts, bangers, and all other forms of explosive devices across Imo State.

Any individual found violating this directive will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

“In view of the dangers associated with these banned items, residents, parents, and traders are strongly advised to desist from dealing in them.

“Members of the public are also encouraged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.”

Okoye noted that the measures are part of ongoing efforts to safeguard lives and property, especially during the festive period, assuring residents of the command’s commitment to maintaining peace across the state.

He also urged citizens to mark the season with caution, saying, ”Members of the public are urged to celebrate responsibly.”
