The University of Ibadan (UI) has celebrated academic excellence as 448 out of 5,900 students graduating in the 2024/2025 academic session earned First Class degrees across various disciplines.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Kayode Adebowale made the announcement on Tuesday during the convocation ceremony for students of Arts, Science, Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Public Health, Dentistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

He commended the graduands, describing their achievements as the result of discipline, perseverance, and hard work, while emphasising that the university has equipped them to tackle global challenges with competence, creativity, and strong character.

Adebowale highlighted UI’s continued prominence as Nigeria’s premier and one of Africa’s most prestigious universities. He lauded the institution’s postgraduate college the largest in Africa, for producing high-level manpower, and noted that the recently established Faculty of Computing positions the university at the forefront of digital innovation.

He also acknowledged the resilience of students and staff amid national economic and infrastructural challenges, citing numerous international research achievements, fellowships, and competitive awards.

In his keynote address, UK-based alumnus and medical practitioner Abel Adegoke urged graduates to embrace resilience, integrity, and service, stressing that challenges are stepping stones to personal and professional growth.

Ayodeji Adeyemi, a graduate from the European Studies Department, praised the university’s reputation, noting that it had opened doors for opportunities such as his current service at the ECOWAS Commission.
