The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has doubled the prize money for the winner of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) from $1 million to $2 million ahead of the tournament in Morocco.
The announcement was made by CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe during a global press conference in Johannesburg, where he described the increase as evidence of the organisation’s commitment to advancing women’s football through meaningful investment.
Motsepe noted that the winners’ prize has risen from $200,000 at the start of his tenure to $2 million, representing a tenfold increase.
He acknowledged criticism over the postponement of the competition but defended the decision to retain Morocco as host, saying it allowed CAF to improve the tournament and increase financial rewards.
The 2026 edition, scheduled for July 26 to August 16, will feature 16 teams for the first time and serve as the African qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
