Public primary and secondary schools across Oyo State recorded full compliance on Monday as teachers commenced an indefinite strike in protest against the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
The industrial action followed the May 15 attack on three schools in the Ahoro-Esinle and Yawota communities, where armed men reportedly kidnapped several teachers and pupils and killed two people.
In response, the Nigeria Union of Teachers directed its members statewide to withdraw their services from June 1 until further notice.
Visits to schools in Ibadan and other major towns showed deserted classrooms, with students turned back at school gates.
However, candidates participating in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination were allowed access alongside teachers assigned to examination duties.
Teachers said the strike was a show of solidarity with the victims and their families.
The union insists stronger security measures are needed to safeguard schools and prevent further attacks on learners and educators across the state.
