Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has formally declared his intention to contest for the Imo West Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, signalling a major political transition ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The governor disclosed this in a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Sunday, where he said he had accepted what he described as a fresh call by the people of Imo West Senatorial District to represent them at the National Assembly.

“My dear people of Imo West Senatorial District have once again called upon me to serve, and I have accepted this noble call,” Uzodimma stated.

The declaration indicates that the governor may leave office before the completion of his tenure in order to pursue the senatorial ambition, although he did not specify when he intends to vacate office.

Uzodimma also revealed that he had appeared before the leadership of the All Progressives Congress and its screening committee for the National Assembly primaries to formally present his aspiration.

According to him, the senatorial bid is rooted in his loyalty to the APC and commitment to promoting the party’s vision and programmes.

He stressed that the senate seat belonged to the party and not any individual candidate.

“The seat belongs to the APC, while I remain only a loyal and dedicated candidate entrusted with the responsibility of projecting and advancing the ideals, vision, and aspirations” of the party, he said.

The governor further commended the APC leadership for what he described as its dedication to people-oriented governance and democratic development across the country.

He urged party members to continue working together to strengthen the party and sustain its political agenda.

Uzodimma linked his senatorial ambition to the administration of President Bola Tinubu, saying his decision was inspired by the desire to support the Renewed Hope Agenda at the national level.

“My aspiration to represent the good people of Imo West Senatorial District at the Red Chamber is inspired by the desire to consolidate on the gains of the Renewed Hope administration,” he stated.

He also promised to provide effective representation, quality legislation and sustainable development for the people of the district if elected.
