Former Commissioner of Police in Lagos and Benue states, Fatai Ajani Owoseni, has resigned from his positions as Special Adviser on Security to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and Executive Secretary of the Oyo State Security Trust Fund, fueling speculation over his alleged governorship ambition ahead of the 2027 election.

Owoseni tendered his resignation in a letter dated May 7, 2026, addressed to Governor Makinde through the office of the Chief of Staff, announcing that his decision takes immediate effect.

In the letter titled “Letter of Resignation: RE: CP Fatai Owoseni, Rtd,” the retired police commissioner expressed appreciation to the governor for allowing him to serve in the administration.

“I present my greetings and wish to humbly inform Your Excellency of my decision to resign my appointments as the Special Adviser on Security and the Executive Secretary of the Oyo State Security Trust Fund (OYSSTF),” he wrote.

Owoseni also noted that his exit would create vacancies in strategic security-related representations currently occupied by him on behalf of the state government.

“By virtue of the office, I represent the State at the Forum of National and Subnational Security Officials (FONSSO) in the office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), as well as on the Board of the Oyo State Security Network (OYSSN)-Amotekun, which may request a replacement,” he stated.

The former police commissioner further disclosed that details of the OYSSTF bank accounts under his signatory authority had been attached to aid a smooth transition.

“The list of OYSSTF bank accounts to which I am a signatory, along with their status, is attached hereto.

“I will be readily available to process changes in signatories for mandates of the different accounts when required,” he added.

Owoseni assured the governor that he remains open to offering professional support on security matters whenever needed.

“I am also available to provide insight or professional opinion on any issue related to my stewardship or other security matters,” he said.

He equally used the opportunity to thank Makinde for the confidence reposed in him during his time in office.

“I seize this opportunity to express my immense gratitude to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Oyo State, for the opportunity to serve our state in my own modest capacity.

“May the Almighty God continue to bless you with good health and divine guidance to lead Oyo State to greater heights.”

His resignation is believed to be linked to preparations for the 2027 governorship race in Oyo State, with indications that he may soon unveil a new political platform.
