Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor has shed light on the financial challenges facing actors in Nigeria’s film industry, blaming the lack of royalty payments for their struggles.
She made this known during a recent appearance on Curiosity Made Me Ask, hosted by Isbae U, where she discussed the structural issues affecting Nollywood practitioners.
According to Ozokwor, actors in Nigeria are typically paid once for their roles, without receiving residual income from future broadcasts or distribution.
“The reason why Nollywood actors and actresses are poor is because we don’t get royalties for what we do,” she said.
She contrasted this with developed countries, where even lesser-known actors continue to earn from past work long after production.
Ozokwor added that this gap has pushed many filmmakers and actors towards platforms like YouTube in search of sustainable income streams.
