US Warns Dual Citizen Nigerians Against Travelling With Foreign Passports

The United States Mission in Nigeria has reminded Nigerians who are also U.S. citizens that they must use a valid American passport when travelling to and from the United States, warning that foreign passports cannot be used for certain travel authorisations.

In a statement shared on its official X account, the mission said the requirement applies to all U.S. citizens, including children with dual nationality.

It stressed that dual-national U.S. citizens are not permitted to use foreign passports to apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), noting that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security routinely denies or cancels such applications.

The mission further advised American citizens living abroad, including those residing in Nigeria, to ensure their U.S. passports remain valid before making travel plans.

It urged affected travellers to renew passports that have expired or are close to expiration to avoid disruptions when entering or departing the United States.
